Since 1909, this little rack-and-pinion train has been one of the must-see attractions in Chamonix.

In 20 minutes from downtown Chamonix, it climbs 871 meters in elevation to drop passengers off at an altitude of 1,913 meters, facing a breathtaking panorama: the Drus, the Grandes Jorasses, and the Mer de Glace as a backdrop.

What is there to see at the Montenvers / Mer de Glace site?

  • The trip itself is an unforgettable experience.
  • Once you arrive, allow 2 to 3 hours to explore the entire site.

The Mer de Glace

  • France’s largest glacier, visible as soon as you step off the train.
  • Impressive in every season.
  • The enigmatic Mont des Drus commands attention with its imposing presence.

The Ice Cave

The cable car descends to the glacier so you can:

  • Stroll through the ice gallery.
  • This cave, carved out each year, takes you deep into the heart of the Mer de Glace.
  • Mountaineers setting out to conquer the peaks from the glacier.

The Glaciorium

  • A space dedicated to the history and science of glaciers, fun and accessible to all.

The Temple of Nature

  • A permanent exhibition tracing centuries of fascination with this site, frequented by the greatest minds since the 18th century.
  • One of the most beautiful terraces in Chamonix

The Montenvers Refuge

  • A Savoyard restaurant with a view of the glacier.
  • It’s hard to imagine a better setting for lunch.

  • Le Panoramique and its terrace facing the Grandes Jorasses is perfect for a coffee or a quick lunch.

You can also head up to Montenvers for spectacular hikes starting at 1,913 m.

The Signal Forbes, the traverse to the Plan de l’Aiguille, the Envers des Aiguilles (more challenging) …

If there’s one must-do activity in Chamonix, it’s hopping aboard the historic red Montenvers train to climb to higher ground and reach the Mer de Glace. It’s a journey back in time and through breathtaking scenery. Even the locals never tire of it.
