L’Épicerie des Praz is the grocer in Chamonix that helps you out at any time of the day, 7 days a week. But it is especially my madeleine of Proust which takes me back to my childhood. The pleasure of going to the corner of the street, to do some shopping. The kindness and the words exchanged with the grocer, that’s what I find here, in the village of Les Praz, in the Chamonix valley.
Everything of a supermarket, but on a human scale
The most amazing thing about this grocery store is how many products are offered in such a small space. But it is so well arranged and displayed! Each item is carefully chosen by Gaële, the grocer. Whether you come for some food shopping or to make a gift, this small store in the village of Les Praz has everything of a big one!
Sunny terrace and colorful fruits and vegetables
What we like at first sight are the colors of the front. The chairs on the terrace are colorful and the fruit and vegetable stall is very attractive. The grocer would like to be able to offer only French products, but the April frosts decided otherwise. However, her stall offers as soon as possible the harvest of the market gardener David Vallas from Vallorcine.
Beyond the basket that you fill much more than what you came for, you can go to the grocery store to buy bread, drink a coffee or even have a snack!
On the spot, on the terrace, in the sun, or to take away, we love the small organic homemade food. Quiches, cakes, gluten-free cookies or even pastries and bread, everything is made by them.
Small catering on the spot or to take away
On a human scale and with love, the savory as well as the sweet is worth the detour. Before leaving for the mountains, stop by the Épicerie de Praz and choose your meal. Either prepared or you concoct your picnic with good bread, cheese and local charcuterie.
Speaking of cheese, Gaële can be proud to sell the fruit of her own sheep (Cacao, Fleurs des Champs and Neige). Housed in the Ayze sheepfold, they produce yogurt, tomme and good milk. When I tell you that it is the passion of sharing good products that animates the grocer and her team!
Promote the short circuit
Beyond the social link that this business represents, L’Épicerie favors short circuits to promote local artisans, creators and producers.
In this Ali Baba’s cave of a thousand treasures, you can find jewelry, quality ceramics, soaps, candles, dried flower bouquets and even CBD products!
Of course, you will find a whole range of local food products such as chocolate from Les Praz, Gin from Saint Gervais, honey from Vaudagne, beer from Chamonix and many other tasty foods.
A gift to offer? Here it is!
I don’t know if it’s the feeling of the grocery store, but I feel so good there that I easily stay 1 hour each time. I have to say that Gaële has great taste! The gift ideas she puts on the shelves are very original and attractive! I particularly like her many ceramics, very contemporary decoration.
I also like her beauty and wellness section which offers organic or natural skin care products. From the soap to the candle that cleans the ears, through the solid deodorants, it’s hard to resist the desire to do something for the planet. I recently acquired washable paper towels as well as a reusable sponge and food paper.
L’Épicerie des Praz is not only a charming local shop, but also very complete. If you are missing something, you will find it there. If you don’t need anything, go and have a coffee and a pastry. A smile, a few words and you’ll be ready for the day!
