Who would have thought that the Refuge des Aiglons, the hotel with a breathtaking view of Mont Blanc, would hide a retro chic restaurant, a huge gin bar worthy of a nightclub and an escape game! That’s a lot of scoops at once, isn’t it? In short, if you’re looking for a place to go out in Chamonix, the Refuge des Aiglons is open to all. “Dad” took “mom” out Thursday night! And do you know where he took me? In an unlikely place in Chamonix, at the Refuge des Aiglons! I hadn’t been there in ages and what a nice surprise! The decoration is incredible. It’s like entering a real refuge with all the comfort and class of a hotel at the foot of Mont Blanc.

Careful and fantastic decoration

We sat down in old armchairs. Behind me stands a cable car cabin of the Aiguille du Midi, yes on the terrace, next to the pool and of course the Aiguille du Midi in the background. Superb! I look around everywhere, the retro chic and slightly burlesque decoration fascinates me. It’s going to sound silly, but I love their cloth napkins stamped Refuge des Aiglons which remind me of good meals at grandma’s house. And then to present the bread on a spike, you should have thought of that!

Anyway, my poor husband tries to catch my eye, but it sweeps the restaurant.

Revisited refuge cuisine

The menu is quite simple, uncluttered, but at least you know right away that it is fresh. The Chef proposes a traditional French cooking and the unavoidable Savoyard specialities. Good franchouillards that we are, we both fall for the snails of Magland with wild garlic butter. Hummm, if I could have licked the dish!

Then we let ourselves be tempted by a supreme of farm chicken label rouge and a risotto of saffron scallops. Same thing, nothing more in the plate! 

After swallowing the last bite of lemon meringue pie, the huge gin bar attracted us like a magnet!

The Gin Bar

I think that’s what impresses the most at the Eagle’s Refuge, this beautiful U-shaped gin bar. No less than 50 references of gin from 50 different countries make for improbable cocktails! Find the famous Gin To of course, but also the London Mule for example (Gin, lime, ginger, ginger beer) or the Hybiscus Gin. 

For this time, as we were only Thursday, we remained reasonable. We preferred to slouch in one of the sofas of the big lounge, a génépi in the hand. That’s it, caught in flagrante delicto! Miss Agnès, in the big living room, near the fireplace with a glass of génépi in company of her husband!

You too, choose the Refuge Aiglons to spend an excellent evening in Chamonix. No need to have your children babysat! A rocking horse is waiting to be ridden in the corner of the lounge. And for the older ones, hold on tight, an escape game is in place in the hotel.

Escape Game

For 10€, if you don’t stay at the hotel but eat at the Table du refuge, ask for a digital tablet at the reception and let your children take part in this activity full of surprises. 

You’ll have time to sip your Virga (delicious Brazilian gin), maybe even a second one. Honestly, what a great idea this escape game is to keep the kids busy while the parents lounge in a majestic lounge.

But if you want to play too, go ahead! This activity is not only for children. With your family, from 7 to 70 years old, you’ll have a great time!

Apéro rosé

If you prefer to spend a crazier evening, make a note in your diary that Saturdays from July 15 to August 15 will be a great time. Imagine, the gondola on the panoramic terrace has been transformed into a bar. The rosé is flowing, the foosball levers are warming up and the Mont Blanc chain is reflected in the pool. The DJ turns up the sound and you turn up the heat, the music taking possession of your dancing body…

So when do we go back? Family night (restaurant, lounge, escape game) or with friends (gin to, DJ, rosé)? The refuge des Aiglons is much more than a hotel. It is a bar-restaurant not to be missed in Chamonix. Its doors are open to all and its spaces will surprise you! To be sure, you should have a dinner or a lunch by the pool.
